International Literacy Day
International Literacy Day (ILD) is an annual event which is celebrated globally during the month of
September. On this day the importance of literacy amongst communities, societies and individuals is
highlighted. In South Africa, a programme such as Adult Education and Training (AET) is well
recognised for the contribution it has made to the marked improvement in adult literacy levels.
The MQA recognises the significance of this day and has been celebrating in partnership with mining
houses and the organised labour in previous years.
Due to covid-19 restrictions and the new normal the MQA will be celebrating the 2021-2022 ILD event as a hybrid event in partnership with various mining houses which will be streaming the event live to pre-confirmed delegates.
The objective of the event is to encourage new entrants, learners who are currently on AET
programmes, and those who have successfully completed their AET training to participate in the event. The theme of the 2021-2022 event is “Transitioning through AET to the 4IR”.
*Please note that due to restriction as per the Covid-19 related regulations and ensuring health and Safety precautionary measures. The physical attendance at the main venue will be restricted to only 200 pre confirmed delegates made up of participant in the programme, AET learners, facilitators, MQA Board, Board Committees members and MQA staff. Other stakeholders may attend the event through a virtual platform.
