The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA), in partnership with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Community Education and Training (CET) Branch, the National Adult Literacy Education Committee (NALEC), and other stakeholders, cordially invites you to attend the 2026 International Literacy Day (ILD) Celebration, which will be held in the Limpopo Province on 12 September 2026.
International Literacy Day is commemorated annually during September to recognise the importance of literacy in empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and promoting sustainable social and economic development. In South Africa, Adult Education and Training (AET) continues to play a significant role in improving literacy levels and creating opportunities for lifelong learning.
The 2026 ILD event will mark the MQA’s 30 years of successfully implementing literacy programmes in the sector, to encourage prospective learners, current AET learners, and programme graduates to continue their literacy and lifelong learning journey. The event will also recognise the contribution of literacy practitioners, educators, employers, organised labour, and stakeholders who support literacy initiatives within the mining and minerals sector and surrounding communities.
The 2026 theme, “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity,” highlights the importance of literacy as a foundation for inclusive development, environmental sustainability, and economic
empowerment.
As part of the celebrations, the MQA and its partners will host a three-hour webinar on 8 September 2026, where practitioners, educators, and subject matter experts will engage on Adult Education and Training and related literacy topics aligned to this year’s theme.”
