Applications Now Open: 2020 MQA Bursary Scheme Intake for Unemployed Applicants

The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) for the  mining and minerals sector in terms of the Skills Development Act No. 97 of 1998.

The MQA would like to invite learners who intend on studying towards a career within the mining and minerals sector, to apply for an MQA bursary. The MQA Bursary Scheme is open to qualifying learners who are currently in Grade 12 and who intend to study during 2020 or current students who are already studying towards a certificate, diploma, degree at a public university, university of technology or a TVET College.

1. The MQA bursary scheme only funds the following qualifications at universities and universities of technology:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Chemical Engineering (mineral processing)
  • Electrical Engineering (heavy current)
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Environmental Health and Management
  • Geology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Jewellery Design and Manufacturing
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering (extractive)
  • Mine Survey
  • Mining Engineering
  • Rock Engineering/Seismology

2. The MQA bursary scheme only funds the following qualifications at TVET colleges:

  • Boilermaker
  • Diesel Mechanic
  • Electrician
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Fitting (including Machining)
  • Instrumentation Mechanic
  • Millwright
  • Rigger Ropesman

NOTE: THIS BURSARY IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS PURSUING POST-GRADUATE STUDIES.

NB: Preference will be given to the following aspects in the selection of candidates:

  • South African citizens only;
  • Financially needy applicants – determined by household income;
  • Female applicants;
  • Applicants living in rural communities;
  • Applicants who have applied to study at their local tertiary institutions; and
  • Academic performance.

The selection criteria, to determine the successful candidates, are based on a weighting system and detailed selection criteria are set out in the Bursary Application Form.

APPLICATION WINDOW

The application period for the 2020 intake will open from 07 August 2019 and close on 09 September 2019.

Applicants currently in Grade 12 must submit both their Grade 11 results (December 2018) and their June 2019 results.

Short-listed Grade 12 applicants should submit their final 2019 Grade 12 results by 13 January 2020.

This application period is for NEW bursary applicants only.

Current MQA bursars must complete the application for “Continuation of Bursary for 2020” which will be available from 01 October 2019 on the website.

NOTEApplicants must ensure that they download and complete the correct application form and submit all the required documents with the form. In the event that an applicant completes an incorrect application form or submit an incomplete application form without the required supporting document, then such an application will not be considered.

Due to the large volume of applications it is expected will be received, the MQA may only enter into further correspondence with the successful applicants.

If you have not received further correspondence regarding your application from the MQA by 30 November 2019, then please consider your application as being unsuccessful.

Late, e-mailed or faxed applications will also not be considered.
